In my opinion, the striped undershirt is one of the most recognizable trademarks of the Russian Army. Every time I tell random trivia about them to my friends, they always say "They're those guys in sailor shirts right?". Very Happy

I'm not sure as to what to answer on your question though, since I'm unfamiliar with the under shirt color coding.

the stripe colour coding is as follows:-

Dark blue / black - Navy / Naval Infantry
Sky Blue - VDV / Spetsnaz
Red - MVD or FSB special forces
Green - Border guards paratroopers

The regular army troops do not wear striped shirts unless their unit has earned the right in battle, such unworthy units wear a plain blue vest instead

So the stripped shirts are also an honor system? Kind of like wearing a Green Beret into combat rather than a helmet? Sounds interestingly effective towards morale...

Yeah except that beret won't protect you from fire. Then again the helmet barely does, but I guess it's better to have something than nothing.

You have to relish in the idea, however; think of the old ways of combat when men were met on the field by men of the opposing force out in the open, and the only deciding factor was who was willing to die first, which would inevitably come out the victor. And the only other thing keeping you alive is how much fear you could instill into the enemies, which is why those large berets that modern armies use worked so well in older conflicts, not to mention the methods William Wallace and his army used, such as donning kilts and mooning their enemies to show how willing they were to win or die on the battlefield. Truly an insightful thought.

Mooning their enemies? Really? Can I ask your source?

History channel had covered some of his tactics, you can find the rest in the BBC archives under William Wallace and the conflicts he fought against his oppressors, it was also idolized in the film 'Braveheart,' which is more popular in reference than the actual citations.

Deadliest Warrior had some historians there that also discussed some of his other tactics, such as the war cry and the use of weapons that instilled fear. Such as a piked shield and the ball and chain.

Braveheart is a pretty cool film. Makes me wonder if Mel Gibson is kinda angry at the British, since most of his films like Braveheart and The Patriot are both against them in a way. Still I like watching the patriot, especially the last battle scene. I always find the combat of that time pretty stupid, since you are standing in a line against your enemy shooting and waiting to be shot. Gotta sucks to be in front during then I suppose.
