In so called "Soviet" movies and games (especially set in Stalingrad), riflemen and snipers wrap the barrel of their Mosin Nagants with some cloth thing. I'm curious, is that historically accurate comrades? If so, what is the purpose and does it have proper name?

I'm not sure if it was as common as it seems in Stalingrad, but wrapping a rifle in a colored cloth has been used before. The idea is that it breaks the outline of the rifle.

Its usually a sandbag slit down the sides and wrapped round the rifle with a gapcut for the scope, bolt, trigger and magazine and then tied with twine. As stated it breaks up the shape of the rifle

Excuse me for sounding stupid, but what does "breaking the shape of the rifle" mean?

It breaks the silhoutte of the rifle. So instead of seeing the outline of a rifle, it'll be broken up. You may be able to notice the outline of the receiver, but there will be a gap from the receiver to the barrel, depending on how you wrapped it.

Did that make any sense? I'm trying to think of a way to explain it without confusing myself.

So people can't tell you've got a gun. Okay, I thought that but I wasn't sure.

Right. I think modern day snipers use it to camo their weapon and keep the glare from shing off any metal

Similar principle used by Soviet soldiers in WWII. After all, ammunition is valuable and you can't waste it by shooting bushes now can you? (Maybe you can but I never done much research on the Nazi Germany's logistics on the Eastern Front but so far I know it's terrible)

The U.S Army uses Crawl Suits or Ghille Suits for breaking the outline nowadays. Those suits look kinda hot though! An example picture below.
